Meagan Michie Named Special Olympics Female Athlete of the Year

Way to go, Meagan! Congratulations on being named Special Olympics Female Athlete of the Year.

Meagan has been a Special Olympics athlete for over 14 years, and this has been her best year yet! At the 2010 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, Meagan represented Team Ontario brilliantly in the sport of swimming, winning 1 gold and 5 silver medals. With such a strong performance, she qualified for team Canada and competed at the 2011 World Summer Games in Greece this past summer, where she earned 4 gold medals. Meagan’s athletic accomplishments are truly remarkable, considering she underwent major back surgery in 2009 and was unable to train for four months. With steel rods along each side of her spine, Meagan still managed to win gold in the 100 Butterfly, a stroke that her surgeon said she would never be able to do again in her lifetime! Wanting to expand her horizons into winter sports, Meagan started snowshoeing in 2010, and competed very well at the regional competition. Meagan is trained as an Athlete Ambassador for Special Olympics and has recently graduated from the Office Administration program at Algonquin college.

Meagan was unable accept her award today, as she is competing in the World Global Games in Italy. The Canadian Team, including 10 swimmers with intellectual disabilities, was selected by SwimmingCanada. Meagan is swimming a full slate of events including the 50, 100, 200 breast, 200 IM, 200 and 400 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. Meagan will return home for two weeks and then she will head off to the 2011 Para Pan American Games being hosted in Guadalajara, Mexico where events for athletes with intellectual disabilities will be hosted for the first time. Congrats and Good Luck Meagan!

Great job Meagan and good luck in Italy and Mexico! We are all cheering you on!
