Swim Program Overview

The GO Kingfish swim program is based on the belief that swimming offers an exciting and valuable experience in a young person's life. Competitive swimming skills can be learned by all, natural ability not withstanding. The value of training however, goes far beyond that of learning efficiency in the water. In a well-developed program every participant benefits.

Competitive swimming stresses two factors, physical conditioning and mental discipline. Mastering these factors is not only essential in this sport, but is also required in preparation for life. Considerable time will be required to become truly competitive, and a sportsman like approach is essential in clearing the hurdles that swimmers will encounter. Immediate benefits however, will be realized in areas such as health, time management and personal development.

Beginning swimmers register in the pre-competitive Junior group and swim at the satellite pools. As swimmers develop, they move (on the recommendation of the coaching staff) into the competitive program with the Bronze, Silver and Gold training groups. As swimmers begin to solidify their technical skills and are ready for a more rigorous training program they move into the Youth group and eventually as they are ready for the highest levels of training and competition they are invited to join the Senior group or High Performance group. The competitive groups swim at Ottawa University. The number of practices that each swimmer will have is based on which group they are in and the coach's recommendations. Practices are normally 1-2 hours in length depending on the level that the swimmer is at.

Registration for the 2010-2011 Competitive Swim Program will be held on Saturday August 28th, 2010 - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Canterbury Arena in the Brian Kilrea meeting room. Coaches and TAS (Team Aquatics Supplies) will be on hand with equipment for immediate sale and also for sizing.

Swim Group Structure

Junior Group (Pre-Competitive Level) - The Junior Group provides young swimmers with a pre-competitive introduction to the sport of swimming. Emphasis is placed on enjoyment, stroke technique and individual achievement within the program. Swimmers are encouraged to improve their skills in the four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. The program is based on a 9-12 week session, which is run 3 times a year. To advance from this level to the next, the swimmer must complete the basic requirements of competently performing at least three strokes and basic skill of the fourth stroke and the parents must be willing the make the necessary commitments to the club.
» Junior Group Swim Meet Questions/Answers

Bronze and Silver - These groups have the swimmers focus on advanced skill development while introducing the training principles of competitive swimming. Criteria for this level are: skill/technique acquisition, attendance, and listening skills/willingness to follow instruction.

Gold - This group builds on the fundamental skills the swimmers have learned to this point. While technical development is still the main focus for this group, they are also introduced to a more complex training environment.

Youth - This group is designed for swimmers who are advanced enough physically, mentally and technically to handle and commit to increased levels of training and time. Swimmers in this group have chosen swimming as the sport in which they would like to excel. The training program is individual medley (IM) based, so that these young athletes can develop in all four strokes. This program will also strive to advance those athletes who have a high level of potential and commitment. It will prepare the swimmers for the next level, while striving to reach Provincial, Youth and Junior National standards.

Senior - Athletes in this group will have demonstrated a high level of commitment and skill. They are striving to achieve Age Group National and Senior National standards in preparation for varsity level swimming. The swimmers in the Senior Group have a very high commitment level to the sport and the time management skills required to compete at this level. A holistic approach to swimming in this group will allow these athletes to pursue and succeed at other areas in their lives.

High Performance - This group is designed to provide the best possible preparation and competitive opportunities for swimmers who are truly committed, talented, and dedicated to becoming world class swimmers. These athletes will be striving for podium finishes at the Senior National level with aspirations of competing internationally. Group selection is at the discretion of the Head Coach.

University - This group is for returning university swimmers who are interested in training full time in the summer. Swimmers will either train with the Senior Group or the High Performance Group at the discretion of the Head Coach. These athletes are expected to adhere to the team guidelines and philosophies and are committed to attaining their personal swimming goals. These athletes are requested to register (with Swim/Natation Canada) concurrently with their Varsity team and GO at the beginning of the competitive season.

University Maintenance - This group is designed to help university swimmers who are interested in staying fit over the summer in preparation for the varsity season. Swimmers in this group will join the Senior Group on a part time basis from May to July.
